This master thesis is aimed to show how the European financial sector in general and the Portuguese sector in more detail reacted to the Global Financial Crises started in 2008. It aims furthermore, to specify how a Portuguese private bank, Banco Espírito Santo, managed to avoid the entrance of the Portuguese government in its capital, as a result of the European crisis and subsequent request for help by the said government to the Troika in 2011. The subject was chosen due to its relevance and actuality. The thesis demonstrates, through the history of the last years, beginning in September 2008, how the process of contamination of the Crises from America to Europe was processed, and how the european and portuguese financial sectors were at the time and how they reacted, as well as, in which way they were affected. It also demonstrates what steps have been and are being taken, to improve the sector´s capability to absorb future Crises and how they are being implemented. Finally, and through the study of a specific bank, shows how it was possible, given the situation and environment that surrounded it, not to resort to the available state aid that it had at his disposal, when several other local and European banks in the same situation did. The main conclusions of this study are based on the facts that the Crises were originated due to lack of regulation and monitoring of the financial sector and upon certain actions could and should be avoided.
