Abstract

The shoe industry in the Lower Segura region is a newly productive sector that has developed with the changes undergone in the production process in the industrial centers of the Vinalopó area. The growth of the shoe industry in this region since 1970 has been made possible by the expansion and dispersion of the industrial facilities of Elche to the nearby regions. This expansion outwards from Elche has favoured the growth of the shoe industry in the Lower Segura region. The implantation of the shoe industry in this area has occurred principally in two different manners: by means of a proliferation of workshops concentrated in industrial parks or by means of a distribution of work to private homes. The research deals with both models through the specialization of the municipalities of Catral and Benejúzar, respectively.
