Abstract

This paper analyses the internationalization of the Spanish footwear industry from 1960 to the present. The first part of the paper deals with how Spanish companies succeeded in entering the international market and Spain became one of the leading exporters of footwear, and how the industry was adapting to the changing international environment to maintain this position. The second part focuses on the investment abroad and the relocation of part of the production of Spanish companies in countries with lower labour costs. Finally, the paper presents some conclusions about the trajectory of the industry and its relation to theories on internationalization.
