Abstract

Compound flooding, resulting from the interaction between hydrological and oceanic phenomena, represents one of the most severe natural threats to urban coastal areas, with its impact increasingly exacerbated by climate change. This study provides a comprehensive review of recent and emerging advancements in numerical modelling systems aimed at analysing compound flooding events. The review evaluates the most widely applied hydrological, hydraulic, and coastal-oceanic models, as well as the coupling techniques employed. The findings indicate that hydrological-hydraulic approaches are predominant, though the integration of urban stormwater drainage systems remains limited. Future research should prioritize the full coupling of models to mitigate the inherent uncertainty in simulating these complex phenomena.
