The goal of this study is to investigate possible changes that the extensive exposition to the Peninsular variety of Spanish may entail regarding the use and command of the Spanish language by three students who self-ascribe as Latinx. By means of the Pragmatic Identity Analysis, we investigate the effect of exposition to both academic and conversational/colloquial Spanish that the students had access to during their stay in Alicante. The analysis of the interviews shows that the three students strengthened their confidence while writing in Spanish, activity that they find less intimidating than speaking. Regarding oral interaction, a student reports speaking more fluently with her parents and cousins. A second student acknowledges that she still has to work on her self-confidence. Finally, the third student shows an enhanced confidence while talking to strangers on the streets. Despite the fact that it is often considered that heritage speakers are in need of instruction focused on reading and writing, our study shows that oral interaction is still a stumbling block, generating feelings of inferiority.
