Abstract

A lo largo de los tiempos históricos y probablemente desde el final del período neolítico, ha habido tres clases de gente en el mundo: los de Arriba, los del Medio y los de Abajo [...]. Los intereses de estos tres grupos son completamente irreconciliables. El propósito de los de arriba es el de seguir en su sitio. Los de en medio quieren ocupar el lugar de los de arriba. La aspiración de los de abajo, si es que tienen alguna -ya que es una característica permanente de los de abajo, que viven tan oprimidos por los trabajos penosos, el no ser; sino de vez en cuando, conscientes de algo diferente a sus afanes cotidianos, es la de abolir todas estas distinciones y crear una sociedad en la que todos los hombres sean iguales...) Incluso hoy, en un período de decadencia, el nivel medio de vida es más elevado de lo que lo fue en los últimos siglos. Pero ningún aumento de riqueza, ninguna suavización de las costumbres ni reforma o revolución algunas han podido hacer avanzar ni un milímetro la igualdad [...] humana. Desde el punto de vista de los de abajo, ningún cambio histórico ha significado algo más que el cambio de nombre de sus amos.
