Abstract

The conditions of overcrowding and insalubrity of the European industrial metropolis during the 19th century had been overcome at the dawn of modern workers’ housing. In Spain, however, and especially in the Valencian region, the construction of social housing in the mid 20th century was the catalyst of an industrialization based largely on the construction sector. Modern workers’ housing is characterized by several aspects: the circumstances that marked its emergence and historical development; the social and economic framework that surrounds it; the position within its discipline; as well as the ideological substratum it reflects. The terraced housing and tourist apartments on the Valencian coastal cities constructed during the middle of the last century were modeled after the Existenzminimun type of avant-garde housing built between the wars in Central Europe.
