In this work, I review some topics of van Dijk’s Discurso y poder that are very important for comprehending the relationships between discourse, individuals, society and abuse of power. More specifically, I review the three-dimensional framework according to which discourse is seen as a linguistic, social-interactive and cognitive phenomenon. This framework proposes that the relationships between discourse and power are mediated by mental activity in ideological individuals contextually situated. Another topic under review is the role that the designing of context by elites plays in the control of discourse comprehension and interpretation. This review ends up exploring some possible limitations of the framework adopted by the author.
