BALTEN: el agua regenerada como garantía de suministro de agua de riego en Tenerife

Abstract

El trabajo que se presenta hace alusión a la experiencia que desde la entidad pública Balsas de Tenerife, BALTEN, se ha venido trabajando a lo largo de 30 años en la reutilización de agua regenerada en el riego, tanto agrícola como de campos de golf. BALTEN es una Entidad Pública Empresarial Local dependiente del Cabildo Insular de Tenerife, que se creó en 1988 con el fin principal de gestionar el agua de riego del norte de la isla para su almacenamiento en invierno y suministro en verano. Los excedentes de agua provenientes de galerías se almacenaban en invierno en una serie de embalses de diversa capacidad y repartidos por toda la geografía del norte de Tenerife. Posteriormente, en la época estival se devolvían a sus propietarios y al resto de agricultores que lo necesitaran. La actividad que ha venido desarrollando BALTEN incluye también la zona sur, y otras actividades como el tratamiento terciario del agua depurada para su uso posterior en la agricultura y campos de golf. El objetivo principal del trabajo es hacer un recorrido por los 30 años que se viene reutilizando agua depurada en el riego, y cómo ha ido variando el suministro de agua regenerada en toda la isla, principalmente la zona sur donde el recurso del agua es mucho más escaso. El agua regenerada constituye en la actualidad la mayor garantía de suministro de agua de riego en la isla de Tenerife.
