Sismicidad en la Comunidad Valenciana (C.V.)

Abstract

This paper describes the seismicity of the Comunidad Valenciana (C.V.) taking into consideration the more recent seismological data. We have to point out that the data included in the earthquake catalogue (historical and the early instrumental data) have some quality problems related to low completeness and homogeneity. The seismic activity in the C.V., mainly in the south of Alicante, is not higher than other areas of the south of Spain but there is a periodic occurrence of earthquakes of moderate to high size. Therefore, the size of these earthquakes and the existence of site effect stress the importance of detailed studies of seismic hazard and risk. The earthquakes are mainly shallow depth earthquakes and the main directions are N45W and N45E (clearly seen at the south of the C.V.). The most active areas are the Alicante province and the south of Valencia.
