Abstract

Cooperative learning is relatively common, but emphasis on its important aspects is not always strong enough, and students may end up without a proper understanding of what cooperative learning is about. We aimed at addressing these limitations, with an emphasis on individual responsibility. To that end, one of the initiatives consisted of promoting specific cooperative-learning skills by appropriate grading mechanisms in each of the four different tests. No academic improvement has been evidenced with respect to students that did not learn cooperatively. However, students improved their knowledge of cooperative learning, which benefits their academic and professional lives. Details of this experience can hopefully be useful to other lecturers with similar concerns on cooperative learning.
