Abstract

Este trabajo realiza un análisis macroeconómico de las causas del mal funcionamiento de los últimos años del sistema Bretton Woods, seguido de la explicación de la transición del Sistema Monetario Internacional hacia los tipos de cambio flotante, incluyendo también la corriente de teoría económica que surgió de aquellas décadas inestables. La convertibilidad del dólar en oro, establecida después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, dejó en manos de Estados Unidos el SMI. La emisión de dólares de forma masiva provocó el problema de inconvertibilidad desembocando en el fin del sistema. La década de los 70 siguió empeorando el panorama económico mundial por las crisis petroleras y las de deuda. Durante esta década de cambios, en la mayoría de países avanzados se dejó fluctuar el tipo de cambio y, en Europa, se intentaba mantener un equilibrio monetario entre las diferentes monedas nacionales para una posterior unión monetaria y económica.
