Tesalia ¿tierra de brujas?

Abstract

Tesalia se trata del centro geográfico por excelencia en el cual los literatos y pensadores clásicos ubican a las hechiceras. A raíz de ello, la historiografía contemporánea ha sugerido que el tópico de la “hechicera tesalia” era una creencia arraigada en el pensamiento colectivo griego. No obstante las fuentes no son abundantes y tampoco se han aportado explicaciones o reflexiones sobre porqué se pudo dar esta situación. Primeramente partimos de la hipótesis de que el tópico de la bruja oriunda de Tesalia sea más bien un producto literario latino, cuyas fuentes sí explotan, entretejen y perpetúan (mucho más que las griegas) dicho arquetipo de género. Para comprobarlo, revisamos las fuentes clásicas helenas para rastrear el momento en que se fundamenta este arquetipo y cómo se transmite al mundo latino, y proponemos los posibles condicionantes históricos, geográficos, paisajísticos, políticos y religiosos que pudieran dar origen a esta creencia popular. De modo más amplio, con dicha investigación pretendemos reflexionar sobre la contribución de los estudios históricos desde la perspectiva de la Historia de las Religiones para acercarnos a la mentalidad de las comunidades del pasado y reflexionar sobre la creación de las identidades en Grecia antigua, entre cuyos factores juega un importante papel las construcciones de género. Si bien nos hemos topado con fuentes sesgadas y fragmentarias, hemos concluido que la “la hechicera tesalia” no se trata de un vicio historiográfico contemporáneo, sino que en efecto, tenía su origen en la tradición mítica y popular griega, pero que a su vez, obedece a la proyección de un discurso triunfalista irradiado desde Atenas tras las Guerras Médicas, que relaciona femineidad, prácticas de poder ritual y barbarie, confeccionando un estereotipo étnico y de género que recopilarán y perpetuarán los literatos latinos posteriores.
