Industria alimentaria: fortalezas y debilidades

Abstract

The food industry holds a prominent position in the Spanish industrial sector as a whole. The objective of this paper is to identify the main strengths and weaknesses of this industry, so that its potential to face the challenges posed by the international competitive environment can be evaluated. For this we have relied on an analysis of the structure of the industry and certain indicators of competitiveness, such as productive capacity, exports and quality of food products, among others. The results are, in general, a strong competitive position of this industry with respect to other economies in our environment. In particular, we can highlight the accumulated know-how, the quality of the products, the degree of diversity and the clear international orientation of recent years as the main strengths. While, the reduced average size of the companies and the scarce private investment in R&D represent the main weaknesses of the Spanish food industry.
