Kartferdighet - Et verktøy for kompetanse i samfunnsfag?

Abstract

Formålet med denne studien er å framheve kartferdighet som et verktøy for elevene i samfunnsfag. Studien fokuserer på bruk av kart i undervisning, og hvordan dette påvirker elevenes kartferdighet. Vi har valgt å bruke disse funnene til å diskutere hvordan kartferdigheter kan være et verktøy for å heve elevenes kompetanse. Studiet består av metodetriangulering og har dermed et særegent forskningsdesign. En spørreundersøkelse ble gjennomført blant samfunnsfaglærere på mellom- og ungdomstrinnet. Denne undersøkelsen ble «et springbrett» til et semi-strukturert intervju. Videre analyserte vi resultatene i undersøkelsene, transkriberte og kodet intervjuene, og ut fra våre begreper tolket vi datamaterialet for å se etter mønster og andre interessante funn. Gjennom analysen oppdaget vi at kart ble benyttet oftere enn vi trodde, men at det sjeldent har et overordnet mål. Inntrykket vi fikk av deltakerne i studien er at elevene generelt er interessert i kart og liker å jobbe med kartaktiviteter, og derfor kan begrepene kartopplæring og kartferdighet ha betydning i samfunnsfag.
