En smart metode? : en kvalitativ studie om erfaringer med SMART-manualen

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine therapists’ experiences with the implementation and use of manuals in clinical practice through a focus group interview. Three therapists were chosen based on knowledge of and lengthy experience with the treatment manual SMART. SMART is a manual-based group program for the prevention and treatment of emotional problems in adolescents aged 14-18. The policy statement on evidence-based practice provides a basis for the development of structured treatment methods in specialist health services. There is, however, little research on how to use the manual-based methods in clinical practice. We wanted to investigate experienced therapists’ views on the challenges and opportunities the manual-based treatments hold, and whether this could give implications for practical use. Findings from the study show that SMART can contribute to a positive sense of community for both therapists and youth, and at the same time show sensitivity to individual needs. SMART could be the starting point for identifying as well as the treatment of emotional disorders. Beneficial settings, training and guidance are essential for the implementation of evidence-based methods in clinical practice.
