Matematikken har sitt eget språk. Det består av egne faguttrykk og symboler og har en lang utviklingshistorie. For å forstå matematiske ideer som er uttrykt i et matematisk språk, må man forstå dette språket. Ved bruk av illustrerende figurer og eksempler kan denne boken bidra til å føre leseren inn i matematikkens verden. Gjennom hele historien har nye faguttrykk og symboler kommet til. For eksempel ble likhetstegnet innført av Robert Recorde i hans bok om algebra: ”The Whetstone of Witte” fra 1557. Robert Recorde mente at likhetstegnet skulle være to parallelle linjestykker fordi, som han uttrykte det, “noe 2 thynges can be moare equalle”. Boken henvender seg først og fremst til studenter i lærerutdanningen som følger kurset Matematikk 1, men kan også brukes av andre studenter innenfor høgskolesystemet og av elever i videregående skole.
