The electromagnetic and mechanical design of a left ventricular-assist device (LVAD) based on a continuous flow electromagnetic blood pump equipped with active magnetic bearings is presented in this final bachelor project. The combination of the high efficiency offered by electromagnetic actuators and the utilization of active magnetic bearings will allow a fine-working, efficient and less damaging operation in patients with heart failure problems who benefit from this therapy. The proposed device, with a diameter of 40 mm and a height of less than 40 mm, presents two controllable degrees of freedom: one related to the spin of the electric motor and another one for the control in the unstable axial axis of the assembled motor and magnetic bearings. The device is capable of offering a maximum torque of 14.89 mNm using a current density of 8 A/mm2 and an axial controlled range of 0.54 mm, while being stable in the rest of the system degrees of freedom.
