Abstract

This thesis focuses on the study of the design decisions that led architect Denys Lasdun to employ tools of modulation and prefabrication in order to adapt to a very specific historical context. After the Second World War, and faced with the need to rebuild a Europe that was beginning to recover in the 1960s and 1970s, architectural design had to respond effectively to the demands of a Britain marked by the transition from a highly privatized social model to a more public one, which fostered the development of large cultural building typologies. The architectural production of the period sought to incorporate the tools proposed by the architects of the Modern Movement, although, since many of them had been conceived with a more rhetorical than pragmatic purpose, it soon became evident that much of these theories required reevaluation. Works inscribed within New Brutalism must be understood through the lens of a postwar society with high demands and significant limitations, such as the lack of specialized labor or the scarcity of materials. All these constraints put the proposals of the movement to the test, which not only reinforced their empirical value but also highlighted the audacity and heterogeneity of the solutions put forward. The structure of this research begins with a historical overview that allows for an understanding of the establishment of prefabrication systems through the study of their temporal and physical context. With the aim of comprehending the architects’ decisions when choosing one system or another, the analysis examines differences in their design methodologies and in the architectural discourse that accompanied each work, identifying both agreements and divergences in their various approaches. This thesis focuses on three projects developed by Denys Lasdun, which serve as examples of large cultural and educational complexes that rely on systems of prefabrication and modulation. For the study of these cases, a synthesis is proposed between the particularities of their physical context and the geometric characteristics of the constructive system employed, in order to highlight both Lasdun’s sensitivity towards the environment and the pragmatic value of his approach. Progressively, the analysis narrows its scope to examine the different units that make up the complexes, as well as the processes of aggregation of these units, which ultimately allows the building to be understood as an entity in growth.
