Frecuentación de urgencias pediátricas: factores determinantes

Abstract

Introduction: The frequentation in pediatric emergency departments is increasing and causes their facilities and services to collapse due to the growing demand. This collapse can lead to a decrease in the health care provided to our patients, and even to an increase in morbidity and mortality. For this reason, this study aims to analyze different factors, such as age, sex, time of day, day of the week or season of the year to evaluate whether or not they are determinants in this increase in frequentation. Main objective: To describe the evolution and characteristics of Pediatric Emergency Department frequentation in the HCD Gómez Ulla C.S. de Vida y Esperanza and to determine the factors that influence it. Methods: Retrospective observational study of patients seen in the Pediatric Emergency Department in 2021, 2022 and 2023. We studied the number of patients attended by day of the week and hour, as well as age and sex. Results and discussion: The demand for care increased by 35.2% in 2022 with respect to 2021. 30.1% of the patients attending the pediatric emergency department were aged between 3 and 5 years. Among the factors studied, there is seasonality, showing a frequency in the number of attendances in autumn of almost twice as many cases as in summer (31.9% vs. 17.5%). The day of the week does not interfere with the number of patients attending the emergency department. On the other hand, the analysis of the time of day shows that patients visit the ED more frequently in the afternoon (50.9%) and, by far, much less frequently in the early morning (10.8%). Conclusion: There is an increase in the number of visits to the pediatric emergency department. Of these visits, an increasing number are considered non-urgent. This poses a serious problem in the adequate management of health resources.
