Salud mental en población transexual

Salud mental en población transexual

Abstract

In the last few years, several studies have suggested the presence of high rates of psychopathology in the trans population and with gender variability. The purpose of this work has been to investigate the prevalence of psychiatric disorders in this group, as well as their relationship to the stigma and discrimination that they often suffer. To this end, this review examines 37 studies, published in the last 5 years, that address the prevalence of various psychiatric pathologies while also addressing possible factors related to them. Among all the psychiatric disorders considered, the most frequent are depression, suicidal ideation and anxiety. Other pathologies that, although to a lesser extent, also reveal a higher prevalence than in the cis population, are substance abuse, eating disorders, suicide attempts, autism spectrum disorders or dissociative disorders. Examining the results according to the age of the subjects, adolescence is shown to be a particularly vulnerable period. Likewise, through the analysis of multiple circumstances related to the transsexual condition, it becomes clear how minority stress justifies the association between transsexuality and psychiatric pathology, thus urging depathologization and the understanding that it is not gender variability that implies the existence of psychopathology in itself. These data point to the need for future research with a rigorous methodology.
