Abstract

Vegetation dynamics on th e lowlands of the Cantabrian region including the coast have been little explored. In this study, a 66 cm sediment core extracted from the Pozo Tremeo coastal lake , was analysed with the aim of clarifying the vegetation history of this area. To achieve this, I produced a high resolution macrofossil record 33 samples) To set the chronology, I selected four plant macrofossil samples to be 14 C dated using AMS, which were added to the thirteen 210 Pb dates a lready available . The robust and detailed age depth model shows that the sediment record spans from 1820 to 2021 CE. In many cases , macrofossils have been identified to species level, which provides a high taxonomic precision. In order t o contextualise the data, a very complete pollen sequence is available, which has made it possible to reconstruct the succession of the vegetation around the lake. At the beginning of the sequence, oak groves with hazel and heathland are widespread. Graduall y, the oak and heathland gradually receded in favour of grassland and cereal fields until the heathland finally disappeared with the rise of cereal fields . Once the cereal cultivation cease, the oak woods and heathland regain some of their extent, and this is the current trend due to agr arian abandonment. The native oak forests have lost much of their extent to eucalypt s and Monterey pine timber plantations, which are still very widespread today.
