The double burden of malnutrition, coexistence of undernutrition and overweight, obesity or diet-related chronic diseases, is a complex phenomenon, closely linked to the nutritional transition, both in food insecure environments in developed countries and, especially, in developing countries. It currently constitutes a challenge for global health systems and has even been prioritized by the World Health Organization through the so-called double-duty actions or dual-purpose actions. It is an obvious statement that international health organizations must be involved in the fight against this phenomenon, but, given the context in which the double burden of malnutrition prevails, Third Sector’s organizations are also a fundamental pillar in that fight. The aim of this work is to carry out a scoping review regarding the actions undertaken worldwide to tackle the double burden of malnutrition, focusing on the role of nongovernmental organizations and other components of the Third Sector. The scoping review returned ten results specifically focused on double burden of malnutrition and improvement actions to fight against it, but it reveals the scarcity of studies focused on that purpose and, particularly, the absence of specific interventions developed by the Third Sector, despite the growing interest that this nutritional problem arouses worldwide.
