Abstract

The aim of this paper is to measure the degree of financial inclusion in Castilla-La Mancha at the municipal level, using the determinant variables on the demand side of banking services that influence financial inclusion. In its analysis, this paper concludes that municipalities with more rural socio-demographic and economic conditions (lower density, higher male ratio or higher rate of ageing population) are more likely to experience exclusion. In addition, a cluster analysis of municipalities without a bank branch and a cluster analysis of municipalities with at least one office are presented in order to group populations with more similar characteristics and to identify and locate municipalities according to their degree of financial accessibility. The second issue addressed in this paper is the effect that FinTech can have on financial inclusion in Castilla-La Mancha. The opportunities and risks of the introduction of FinTech in municipalities with financial inclusion problems are presented and it is found that, in the case of Castilla-La Mancha, there are around 150 municipalities in which the necessary conditions for FinTech to operate can be observed, both in terms of access to technological infrastructures and potential demand, and which are not provided by a bank branch.
