Abstract

The communicative limitations imposed on speakers worldwide since the development of the pandemic of 2020 continue to affect deeply our spoken discourse, a verbal-nonverbal activity, with obvious personal and social repercussions. If we read the literary quotations gathered here imagining their characters with face masks on and keeping the prescribed distance, we realize that, given the absence of most of their facial features (with their kinesics and microkinesics) and of any physical contact, what would matter most in those encounters would be the very conscious use of gestures, manners and postures of the eyes, brows and forehead, together with words and their paralanguage and the kinesics and parakinesics of the rest of the body. In addition, we are experiencing the concealment of something as essential in human communication as the smile, an allied of gaze, as the worst mutilation of interactive speech.
