Aguas residuales como fuente de recursos

Abstract

Actualmente, con el aumento de la población mundial y sus necesidades, se ven las aguas residuales no solo como una fuente de agua limpia, sino como una fuente de otros recursos como energía, nutrientes y otros productos. De este modo, las estaciones de depuración de aguas residuales (EDAR) ya no se constituyen únicamente como una serie de tratamientos para devolver las aguas lo más limpias posible a un cauce natural, sino que también se contemplan como una fuente de recursos. Desde el punto de vista energético se obtienen varios tipos de energía, siendo el biogas, principalmente metano, la obtención mayoritaria; le siguen la energía bioelectroquímica y calor. Los nutrientes se pueden obtener de dos formas, como compost y, como compuestos específicos (principalmente estruvita). Otros productos que podemos obtener de las aguas residuales son bioplásticos y biodiesel. Analizando la bibliografía existente, vemos que estos recursos cada vez están más presentes, tanto a nivel energético como de nutrientes y, que llegarán a ser un factor clave para la humanidad.
