Aguas residuales como fuente de nutrientes

Abstract

La recuperación de recursos como agua, energía y nutrientes de las aguas residuales es uno de los mayores desafíos a los que las sociedades de hoy en día han de enfrentarse. La necesidad de recuperar nutrientes como nitrógeno y fósforo surge, no lo solo porque se trate de un recurso limitado (en el caso del fósforo), sino por acercarnos cada vez más a un modelo circular de los recursos y a un sistema más sostenible y respetuoso con el medio ambiente. En los últimos años se están desarrollando tecnologías que permiten la recuperación de los nutrientes, mejorando las técnicas tradicionales que solo procedían a su eliminación, para evitar los problemas asociados a sus elevadas concentraciones en los medios acuáticos, como la eutrofización. El presente trabajo pretende proporcionar una perspectiva global de los procesos y técnicas que se han venido desarrollando en el tratamiento de las aguas residuales y que persiguen una recuperación de los nutrientes contenidos en ellas, focalizándonos en el nitrógeno y el fósforo. Además de una revisión del estado del arte de las técnicas ya existentes para la recuperación de nitrógeno, fósforo y de ambos conjuntamente, se han tenido en cuenta también las técnicas emergentes y líneas de investigación en desarrollo, así como, las ventajas e inconvenientes que cada una de las técnicas aportan.
