Linguistic resistance in changing contexts: an approach from domestic commands in Toba language

Abstract

Research on linguistic shift processes points to the interruption of language intergenerational transmission as the main reason why a language is endangered. However, are all language aspects equally affected by this interruption in language teaching among parents and children? With the aim of going deeper in these aspects, this article looks into the language socialization of a group of indigenous children from an urban settlement in Buenos Aires (Argentina) which was originated by migration to the city. Especially, within the frame of a process of Toba language shift by Spanish, a typical use of the language is systematized in the parental relationship that seems to be resistant to such a change-i.e., daily domestic commands issued by parents to their children. These interaction routines not only allow us to perceive the language uses that last, but are also basic for household dynamics at the sociocultural level, as they relate to the cooperative organization of chores within the family and to children desirable social behavior.
