Abstract

This Bibliographic Seminar’s multidisciplinary debate concerns Germán Scalzo’s work on "Economic rationale", in which he analyses in great depth how economic rationale has been understood and undertaken in different cultures and what its consequences have been. This contribution to the multidisciplinary debate has concentrated on evaluating what is meant by economic rationale and on Professor Martínez Echevarría’s evaluation as the book’s author. Here the debate considers two points. First, the idea of productivity and its role in the work processes, which going beyond the merely technical idea of productivity, is basically a social one. This therefore implies the inclusion of the individual, both in the configuration of economic processes and in the correct interpretation of productivity as a contribution to the economy’s ultimate aim: the integrated development of the individual. The second aspect of the search for an economic order which is based around the individual’s action within the economy, breaking free of the reductionisms of interpreting the economy in the absence of the individual. The School of Freiburg’s contribution is fundamental to this orientation of the economy towards the individual, to his or her integrated development, demanding a response from the requirement of, on the one hand economic efficiency and on the other, of human dignity . This, in other words, is an economy that works with the individual and for the individual; it works to develop the individual’s development and for the articulation of an order of society that is oriented towards the integrated development of the individual in his or her dimension as a person and his or her inclusion in order to develop his or her innate social dimension.
