La finalidad de este trabajo es abordar, de manera sistemática y en orden cronológico, los principales acontecimientos del ámbito penitenciario desde el siglo XVII hasta la actualidad, para ello ha sido objeto de estudio los hechos históricos más trascendentes del desarrollo del derecho penitenciario, la normativa y la evolución de ésta. A través de dicha investigación hemos observado la evolución del sistema penitenciario y las sucesivas mejoras de éste. Hemos analizado la evolución de los centros penitenciarios hasta la fecha, asimismo, hemos examinado la clasificación penitenciaria, los diversos programas de tratamiento que se dan en el sistema penitenciario español, y las progresivas reformas que se han ido produciendo. Para finalizar las conclusiones manifiestan de manera global una crítica personal del recorrido evolutivo de esta ciencia.

The purpose of this essay is to show, systematically and in chronological order, the most significant events in the Penitentiary Law from the XVII century to present day. In doing so, this document considers the most relevant historical changes as well as the Penitentiary Law itself and its own evolution. This essay covers the evolution and the improvements in the prison system over the years. The document reviews the evolution of the prison centres from past to present day and it also comments on the classification of centres, the programs for rehabilitation under the Spanish prison system and the legal reforms that have been introduced over the period. Finally, the conclusions listed at the end of this document reflect my personal view on the general evolution of this field.
