La obesidad es uno de los problemas de salud pública más graves del siglo XXI. Su incidencia y prevalencia está aumentando rápidamente, y además constituye un gran riesgo para la salud, ya que se asocia con varias comorbilidades entre las que se encuentra la diabetes mellitus tipo II. Existe un gran número de alternativas terapéuticas para reducir los síntomas y complicaciones derivado de la diabetes, aunque en muchos casos siguen siendo insuficientes, lo que justifica la búsqueda de nuevas alternativas. Una posible opción de origen natural se encuentra en la capsaicina que es la responsable de la sensación de ardor o pungencia de los los pimientos picantes. Esta molécula tiene acción vanilloide siendo agonista del receptor TRPV1. En este trabajo se ha realizado una revisión de los numerosos estudios que se están realizando sobre el sistema vanilloide, en concreto, aquellos en los que se relaciona este sistema con los posibles beneficios aportados en la obesidad y la diabetes. Los resultados sugieren que la capsaicina y su acción sobre TRPV1 a través de diferentes mecanismos moleculares, pueden mejorar estas dos patologías, por lo que se convierten en objetivos terapéuticos potenciales.
Obesity is one of the most severe public health problem of the 21st century. The incidence and prevalence of obesity is rapidly increasing. Furthermore, it represents a great risk for human health, because of its association with several comorbidities, among the diabetes mellitus type II. There are a great number of therapeutic alternatives to reduce the symptoms and complications derived from diabetes. However, in many cases, these alternatives are insufficient. The search for further alternatives is therefore justified. A possible option from a natural origin could be capsaicin. This chemical component is responsible for the burning feeling or pungency from spicy peppers. This molecule has a vallinoid action, being agonist of the receptor TRPV1. In this study an review of the many research on the vanilloid system has been done, particularly an inspection of those studies that relate this system with possible benefits for obesity and diabetes. The results suggest that capsaicin and its action over TRPV1 through different molecular mechanisms can be potential targets for the improvement of these two pathologies.
