Abstract

This article is an analysis of urban legends collected from Spanish speakers who live in Melbourne. Focusing on three themes—hitchhikers, the role of women in society and humorous legends about victims of circumstance—and using social psychology, we examine how these urban legends become relevant for their interlocutors through an exploration of their contexts and the evolution of their content over time. Furthermore, this article considers how the inclusion of morals, transgressions of social rules, warnings and comic elements serve the interlocutors as a means of confronting everyday life.
