In the last five years business scenarios have been dynamised in such a way that they require significant change in management capacity. First of all, the complexity of the environment never ceases to increase, along with the speed of change. Furthermore, Politics and Society’s influence on the configuration of the environment is also growing, a factor that obliges businesses to manage themselves in different ways. Moreover, the increasing complexity and dynamics of the environment cannot be responded to merely by simplifying the complexity – one needs to learn how to manager in such complex environments; one needs to accept this complexity and generate a executive responsibility that is able rapidly to adapt business strategies to their environments. The mission of his businessman-cum-executive is no longer one of "administration" or "management", but rather one of assuming the mantle of "business spirit and action". In his executive role, this requires both firm leadership and a great strategic capacity. Not only do markets and business environments involve economic risks; they also increasingly involve social and political risks. The configuration of this figure of the businessman-cum-executive is the key to business success and affects almost half of all directors. A country’s success springs from it executive capacity in both public and private institutions. This, then, is the great shift.

Los escenarios empresariales se han dinamizado de tal manera en los últimos cinco años que exigen cambios significativos en la capacidad directiva. Por un lado, la creciente complejidad de los entornos, la velocidad del cambio de los mismos, el peso creciente de la Política y de la Sociedad en la configuración de los entornos, obliga a otra forma de dirigir las empresas. Por otro lado, la creciente complejidad y dinámica de los entornos no puede sencillamente responderse con una simplificación de la complejidad. Sino que hay que aprender a dirigir en entornos complejos, hay que asumir la complejidad y hay que generar la responsabilidad directiva capaz de adaptar las estrategias empresariales rápidamente a los entornos. La búsqueda y el desarrollo de este "directivo-empresario", cuya misión no es ya "administrar o gestionar" negocios, sino asumir el "espíritu y la acción empresarial" en su función directiva le exige tanto un fuerte liderazgo como también una gran capacidad estratégica. Los mercados, los entornos empresariales no solo implican riesgos económicos, sino sociales y políticos de forma creciente. La configuración de este nuevo perfil "empresario directivo" constituye la clave del éxito empresarial y afecta a casi la mitad de los directivos. El éxito de un país radica en su capacidad directiva tanto en instituciones privadas como públicas. Este es el gran cambio.
