The Autonomous Region of Madrid has important challenges in both its urban and rural environments. The great importance of the built areas, the low relative importance of the agrarian sector in the regional GDP, and the weak weight of the active agrarian population do not de-emphasize the important role played by the rural world in this region. This presentation, delivered at the Jornada Autonómica de Madrid in September 2002, is placed in the framework of the white book on agriculture and rural development set by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fishing and Food. A diagnosis of the current situation and the formulation of an operative framework to incorporate detailed measures to support Madrid rural environment is presented.

La Comunidad de Madrid tiene, también en su espacio rural, desafíos importantes. La importancia del área construida, la escasa significación del peso del sector agrario en la formación del PIB regional, la débil franja de población activa agraria no son datos que anulen el papel decisivo que tiene el mundo rural en esta Comunidad. En el marco del libro blanco de la agricultura y el desarrollo rural en España, preparado por el Ministerio de Agricultura, Pesca y Alimentación, se sitúa esta ponencia que fue defendida en la Jornada Autonómica de Madrid en Septiembre de 2002. En ella se hace un diagnóstico de la situación actual y se formula un marco operativo que acoja medidas concretas de apoyo al espacio rural madrileño.
