The analysis of democracy in Latin America has focused during the recent years on strengthening the institutions and the legitimacy of governments, however, the civil society, and particularly associations, seems to have had a minor role in the study of quality and functioning of democracy in the region. This paper aims to conduct an exploration of associations in Latin America and, with the results of Latinobarómetro, to examine on a descriptive level the degree of membership and of the nature of involvement in voluntary organizations in the region, as well as the relationship between the associations’ membership and political participation, demonstrating its potential impact on democracy.
