From the Sixteenth Century, the printed versions of Aesop's fables incorporate some proverbs on its margins which synthesize the moral teaching of each fable. This kind of mercantile strategy, coincident with the new impulse given to wisdom literature since Renaissance, allows observing clearly the moral purpose of the fable while it makes easier its memorization. This article examines this corpus, identifies its variants by collating several editions, and addresses its relationship to the narrative forms. Finally, it indicates the use of these texts by the anonymous collector of the manuscript Zabálburu IV-206, who had to have in his hand any annotated edition of Aesop.
