Peasants have traditionally been considered barbarians within civilization. In what follows, I will study how different considerations, besides the study of contemporary specific material reality, allow us to conclude that our civilization is rather characterized by some form of regressive progress that puts us at the gates of a generalized barbarism. As such, the specific knowledge of the peasants' reality, as addressed in the article, may be our best chance to build a civilized and emancipatory way out for human life on the planet.
