The physiology of cold resistance in plants.

Abstract

Winter injury is a serious problem to agriculture in temperate climates the world over. Macoun (1908) states, "If one could make an accurate estimate of the number of fruit trees which have been Winter killed in the colder parts of Ontario and the Province of Quebec, the figures would be astounding, they would be so large. This has been the chief cause of the slow development of the fruit indnstry in the colder parts of Canada." Summing up the importance of injury in Michigan during eighty winters, Bradford and Cardinell (1926) maintain that "To countless individuals and numerons commities it has been a calamity and has entailed distress and bankruptcy."
