Abstract

Tesis (Magíster en Economía)--Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, 2014 ; El uso de bienes intermedios importados en la producción de bienes finales crea un mecanismo que amplifica el aumento de los volúmenes de comercio ante una reducción de tarifas, ya que al implementar esta condición, al reducir tarifas necesariamente se produce una caída en el costo marginal de bienes finales. Este efecto debería ser importante para explicar lo que ocurre en industrias caracterizadas por procesos de producción en etapas. Para mostrar esto, desarrollo un modelo de comercio con bienes intermedios, y lo calibro para la industria automotriz de Canada y Estados Unidos antes del Auto Pact Agreement. Al agregar la caída de tarifas observada en el tratado, el modelo sobrestima el aumento de las exportaciones de Estados Unidos con respecto a las observaciones, y subestima el aumento de las exportaciones de Canada. El modelo también incrementa la producción relativa de Estados Unidos en relación a la de Canada.
