Abstract

Combinando métodos de campo (trampas camara, colecta de restos y cráneos encontrados en campo, y transectos), obtuvimos evidencia fotográfica y biológica que confirma la presencia actual de jaguarundi (Puma yagouaroundi) en tres regiones del estado de Michoacán, México. La evidencia de jaguarundi consiste de once registros de siete localidades de las tres regiones que presentan bosques tropicales. El fototrampeo proporcionó siete registros, dos registros se obtuvieron de transectos diurnos, incluyendo una cría hembra abandonada de la cual se obtuvo muestra de sangre. El resto de los registros corresponden a dos cráneos y muestras de tejido encontrados en los transectos. Una secuencia de nucleótido de 1089 pares de bases del gen de citocromo b se obtuvo de restos de tejido y constituyen la secuencia más larga reportada para la especie y la más norteña. El mayor número de registros se obtuvo de bosque tropical subdeciduo, y solo un registro de bosque de pino-encino. Ocho registros se obtuvieron en condiciones de fragmentos de bosque continuo, pero tres registros provinieron de vegetación fragmentada. Hipotetizamos que los registros de los municipios colindantes de Arteaga y Lázaro Cárdenas provienen de una población continua que se distribuye a lo largo de la Sierra Madre del Sur y la costa del Pacifico de Michoacán, nuestra evidencia son la relativa cercanía entre registros independientes, ya que cinco registros corresponden a diferentes individuos identificados por coloración de pelaje y sexo. El registro del municipio de Gabriel Zamora constituye la localidad de distribución más interior para la especie en el centro occidente de México.
