The author carries out a memory exercise by which he explores his years of academic education in Europe. The text, besides from being an exceptional personal record, is also an outlook of the intellectual debate present in French social sciences throughout a particularly interesting period of its history, seen through the eyes and experience of a Brazilian intellectual and researcher; debate that has also had a very strong presence in the history of Latin-American social sciences.
