STUDY ON ALTERNATIVE FUELS FOR MARINE APPLICATIONS

Abstract

The various parts of the shipping industry - shipowners, shipbuilders and classification societies (the depositories of technical expertise in the industry) - are actively examining a number of technical ways to reduce emission of noxious SOx, NOx and PM from ships to air.In the longer term the shipping industry is also exploring a number of alternative fuel sources to help reduce emissions from ships. The paper focuses on the use of low sulphur fuels, gas fuels and bio-fuels.
