En 1899 Thorstein Veblen escribió La teoría de la clase ociosa como una crítica a una sociedad norteamericana que en dos décadas se convertiría en la llamada sociedad de consumo. Durante aquellos felices veinte (roaring twenties) se infló lo que sería una de las burbujas económicas más sangrantes y, un siglo más tarde, tras los meses en los que nos hemos visto en la obligación de permanecer en burbujas físicas por el confinamiento, hablar de consumo en singular puede revelarse insuficiente.
