Abstract

Les observations de Jean de Plan Carpin et de Guillaume de Rubrouck associees aux recits du celebre marchand Marco Polo (1265-1323) confirment la presence d'Eglises de langue syriaque dans les terres mongoles. Le proselytisme chretien aupres des tribus nomades et des communautes sedentaires d'Asie centrale intervenait souvent dans un contexte d'intense competition avec l'islam. Dans ce contexte de pluralite des confessions en Asie centrale, le reseau des metropolites qui furent crees par l'Eglise orientale a exerce son influence sur de nombreux peuples pendant plus d'un millenaire
