This paper offers a critical analysis of the conversations where Pierre Hadot makes an account of his own philosophical itinerary. We will suggest that those texts broadly follow a definite thread which finds its point of departure in the experience of the so-called “oceanic feeling”. We will suggest that Hadot’s treatment of this experience drew some of his followers to find in his growing interest towards stoicism the effect of an immanentist preconception. We will show that the way Hadot’s autobiographical account has been interpreted so far ultimately has to do with its bergsonian character : the experience of the oceanic feeling seemingly acts in his narrative as a “philosophical intuition”. This reflection as a whole will allow us to draw an alternative motive for the understanding of Hadot’s life, which has to do with the problem of text interpretation.
