Abstract

L’incertitude fait partie intégrante du quotidien du traducteur professionnel. Elle découle de multiples imperfections du message original et de la capacité de compréhension immédiate de ce message par le traducteur. S’appuyant sur un exemple tiré d’un texte pragmatique, l’analyse portera sur la levée d’une incertitude par l’application de la théorie interprétative de la traduction (TIT) élaborée et développée par Danica Seleskovitch (1921-2001) et Marianne Lederer. Cette approche doit normalement permettre à un traducteur compétent de réunir les éléments propres à aboutir à une équivalence fonctionnelle entre l’original et la traduction. L’analyse mettra néanmoins en lumière certaines zones d’incertitudes inhérentes à la théorie interprétative. Il s’agit donc de proposer un enrichissement de cette école interprétative par les concepts et méthodes de la théorie de l’enquête de John Dewey, afin de lever ces incertitudes. En ce sens, loin de remettre en cause cette théorie et son caractère tout à fait opérationnel pour les professionnels de la traduction et de l’interprétation, cet article s’inscrit pleinement dans la réflexion intellectuelle autour des approches pragmatiques de la traduction voulue par les fondatrices de la TIT.
