Abstract

South Korean culture is gaining global momentum, particularly in Korean television series, known as k-dramas. Among their themes, bullying is a social issue frequently addressed in these media. This article examines the representation of bullying in a school setting in the hit k-dramas The Glory (2022-2023) and Boyhood (2023) through a socio-psychological and cinematic perspective. This study demonstrates that bullying in The Glory is characterized by Pratto and Sidanius’ social dominance theory, while the protagonist’s revenge is illustrated by the Korean notion of han, which is defined as a feeling of deep sadness, and by the aesthetics of horror cinema. On the one hand, Boyhood presents bullying in a school context with aspects of Bandura’s social learning theory, while the interpersonal relationships between the characters, aggressors and victims, are typical of the Korean notion of jeong, an emotion of affection between individuals, and are depicted in a nostalgic aesthetic. In Korea, this form of violence is strongly rooted in the nation’s collectivist society and its neo-Confucian ideology, according to which there is an apparent hierarchy between social classes. Potential factors for Korean students’ violent behavior toward their peers are family discord and the school environment, which may prompt adolescents to adopt aggressive strategies in order to gain a dominant social position. This topic can be linked to other areas of study, such as gender representation in k-dramas.
