The Committee for Human Rights in North Korea (HRNK), in collaboration with AllSource Analysis, has released a satellite imagery-based report titled North Korea: Imagery Analysis of Kyo-hwa-so No. 12, Jongo-ri. This marks the first joint HRNK/AllSource Analysis effort to focus specifically on a kyo-hwa-so (re-education through labor camp), following earlier investigations into the country’s prison system. The report builds on prior documentation by highlighting current conditions and infrastructure through high-resolution imagery, emphasizing the dire circumstances faced by detainees at the facility. The report urges the North Korean government to take immediate steps to address human rights abuses within Kyo-hwa-so No. 12. Recommendations include improving prisoners’ nutritional status, enhancing health and safety standards—especially in the prison-operated copper mine—ensuring water safety, and granting full access to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). Although kyo-hwa-so camps differ from kwan-li-so political prison camps in that they hold both common and political offenders with defined sentences, both systems are marked by extreme brutality and inhumane conditions.
