La savia del imperio: azúcar, comercio y relación colonial en Cuba

Abstract

En la tercera década del siglo XIX, el imperio americano español se había visto reducido a las islas de Cuba y Puerto Rico. A partir de ese momento, el azúcar constituyó la savia de un imperio que, si bien estaba articulado de un modo muy diferente al de otras potencias europeas, resultaba sumamente congruente con sus condiciones específicas. El artículo tiene dos partes. En la primera, a partir del libro Los ingenios, se analiza el funcionamiento de la industria azucarera cubana en un momento en que los productores de la Gran Antilla eran los principales abastecedores del mercado mundial y con la riqueza generada sufragaban el mantenimiento del imperio colonial. En la segunda, se estudian las relaciones comerciales, el debate y la política establecida en torno a ellas, pues éstas fueron la clave para el mantenimiento del dominio español en la isla y la fuente de extracción de renta colonial que lo justificaba.
