Abstract

Este artículo presenta la historia personal de John Downie, un comisario escocés en el ejército peninsular del Duque de Wellington, que anteriormente había luchado en Venezuela con Francisco de Miranda, que se convirtió en un general español y terminó su vida, en 1825, como campeón del servilismo. La importancia de esta historia estriba, en primer lugar, en el ejemplo que nos presenta de la importancia del aventurerismo en la época napoleónica, y, en segundo, en las sugerencias que contiene respecto a los defectos manifiestos del liberalismo decimonónico español.
